Numerous, not to say uncountable, were the small two cents publications who were published in weekly or twice-weekly fascicles for a public of french wise girls, shopgirls, dressmaker's girls or apprentices. Covers were high in color, the nastys really nasty, the kinds really kind, as for the heroins, they were always good and pure and they always arrived at them only nasty things till the final end when, reversal of situation, everything arranged for them in unhoped-for but permanent way.

Cœur féroce, cœur tendre is in this category. The author is anonymous. The illustrator of the cover (the fascicle contains text only) is anonymous too. It does not matter. They were paid for a drawing, or for a line, and our shopgirls paid attention to their names. We are not here in the great literature but in entertainment.

The publication began May 12th, 1914 and continued, during 25 issues, at the rate of 2 issues a week. The serial stopped publishing with its 25th episode, on July 31st, 1914, without being ended. We shall not offend our readers by thinking that they can ignore the reason of this incompletion.

For this major reason which transformed a lot of our shopgirls into nurses or into widows, even in both, is added in this case a less evident reason but the proof of which is given to us on the back page of fascicles: the publisher of these brochures, A. Eichler Publishing, even if it had an office in Paris, 9, rue Friant, was German and printed in Dresden, in Germany.

But what imports the end, we guess it easily. We guess moreover largely the whole progress of the story only by looking at the succession of covers. We incite our readers to practise this innocent divination, they will so work on Jean Ray's tracks who did not make the other matter for translate into French a lot of Harry Dickson.
